Day dreaming...Despite all the models of Ambassadeur that have been produced over the years I have not yet found one that has all the features I like combined in one reel. I'd like one that casts as well as a pre-1980s model, the ones with the two end caps like is currently used on the RHW only Rocket series. However for lure casting a palming side plate would be preferable to one of those as the starting point.

To be honest the bog standard C3 (having no Thumbar and a removable thumb rest) is a good chasis to work on, requiring the addition of Carbon Matrix drag washers (if not already fitted with them as standard) with Smooooth Drag ground steel washers. The ball bearing count would be increased with a dual bearing level wind and a bearing fitted idler gear.

The Record spool configuration, with an extra bearing in place of the bushing, would be nice - using the low capacity vented design. The standard 5.3:1 gear ratio is perfect as it is, but using the stainless steel gears from a JB model would be nice.

Cosmetically I would opt for the 'silver' side plates, a chrome cage with a chrome star wheel, handle and nut - the knobs being the rounded style in hard plastic of a colour to match the clicker button (black for preference). The spool would match the standard side plates.

The closest I have got to this ideal is the C3 shown here which has an added dual bearing levelwind, Smoothie washers and a chromed star wheel and handle with black knobs. It's a sweet reel - but I never have got round to fitting the stainless steel gears and bearing idler gear!
